Weekend soccer, since 1964.

We are Marin’s original soccer league.

Meet our leadership

See where we play

Humble beginnings.

Back in 1964, a group of soccer (football as its called in Europe) enthusiasts were getting together on a regular basis at the Mayflower Pub in San Rafael, CA, and a drive was spearheaded by the pub owner Barry Oldham, a Sheffield Wednesday enthusiast, to start an adult soccer league in Marin County. It was called the Mayflower Soccer League. Early teams were Inter Marin, the Old Boys, the Internationals, etc. and they played their games regularly every Saturday at McInnes Park in San Rafael. Over the years the league grew to as many as 14 teams and in 1986 the league decided to rename itself the MARIN SOCCER LEAGUE to identify itself with the county.

Growing our family.

With the growth in more and more younger players joining the league being able to play on Saturdays in Marin and on Sundays in the San Francisco League, a need arose to provide an avenue to have competition for the older players and an over 40 division was formed in 1990, with initially 8 teams in the over 40 division competing every weekend, the Open league continue to play to provide competition to the younger crowd. The level of play in either division was always at a relatively high level with former semi-pro and professional players from the United States, Central and South America and Europe competing weekly. The league prides itself in being multi-cultural and welcomes all players of every national origin.

Continuing to evolve.

As in previous years and as the over 40 players matured, the demand arose for an over 50 division, which began with much success in 2002 starting with 6 teams growing to 11 teams currently.  There are players strapping on their boots on a weekly basis playing in the Over 50 division well into their 70s.  Recently an Over 58 division was formed and by mid-2019, 4 teams were created and formal games scheduled.

With the growth of soccer nationally, the Marin Soccer League is looking to expand beyond the Marin County borders.

Making it work.

The league is funded strictly from dues by the teams and players and the league continues to pursue funding from outside through web ads and other social media type of advertising.

We care.

The Marin Soccer League is fortunate to have access to recently built artificial soccer fields, which allows the league to play virtually year-round, which is unusual in the Northern California adult soccer community. Additionally, the league requires that all players be registered with California Soccer Association North, which provides us with the insurance coverage for the fields and to a lesser extent a nominal portion of medical costs for the players in case of injury.

In memoriam

A remembrance for the players and dear friends we have lost.
